TTT #29: Things I Like/Dislike When it Comes to Romances in Books

Top Ten Tuesday button

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish where people share their top ten things according to the topic of that week.

Such a great topic! I can already tell that I will be seeing a lot of the same answers around. I could only come up with eight but I'm sure I'll be hitting my head later on for forgetting obvious ones.

DISLIKES:
1. Insta-love - I can't stand insta-love. I want my romance to be realistic and believable. Thank you very much.
2. Love Triangles - I'm bad at making choices lol. Also, if my ship doesn't sail, I'd be very sad and frustrated. I'd probably even hallucinate a different ending.
3. Love Triangles involving one girl and two guys - Why? Tell me why it's always two guys fighting over the one girl.
4. Repetitive Descriptions - I get that he/she is super duper mega sizzling hot. It does not need to be repeated a gazillion times!

LIKES:
5. Slow-burn romance - These are the BEST!! I can't get enough of it!!! More please~~~
6. Friends-to-lover - I enjoy watching the development from friendship into something more~
7. Enemy-to-lover - I love seeing the change from hate to love. The progression is oh so sweet!
8. Forbidden Love - I had a hard time deciding whether to put this one in Like or Dislike but ultimately decided I like it most of the time. If done right, it can be so enjoyable.

Ripple and I have our own little romance ;)

What do you like and dislike about romance in books?

  1. Aww! Your Valentine is the cutest! Ok, you did mention something that bothers me. I get annoyed when it's constantly repeated how super duper sizzling hot a guy is. I do really like forbidden love and enemy-to-lover. Great list! I had a little trouble with mine so I kind of modified the topic. Here's my TTT

    1. Hehee thank you ;) Just because you keep repeating how sizzling hot someone is doesn't mean he'll get any hotter, right?!? It definitely bothers me :S

  2. YES to slow burn romances! They really are the best, and so awesome to read about. It bothers me so much when characters fall in love really quickly. Being attracted to someone really quickly, I'm perfectly fine with, as long as it develops into a slow burning romance... then it can be amazing :D Great list!

    1. I think I enjoy triangles when my ship works out! Or else I'd feel very frustrated and disappointed :( Ripple and I meow our thanks~~

  4. Great list! I'm totally with you on so many of these, we have basically the same list! And I get what you mean about "forbidden love." I'm usually a fan of that because it makes for some juicy drama but it can also be really frustrating. At some point you just have to admit that if you can't be together, you shouldn't be together. Great list!

  5. YES! To all of these! I love a friends to lovers best but I also really love a hate to love thing too, don't ask me why but there is just something about them that I love!

    1. I think it's the tension we get to experience alongside them! The wait is intense but oh so sweet ;)

  6. Forbidden love! most definitely. I'll read anything that features this trope. :)

  8. OOoh nice! I tire of the love triangle as well! Not sure why it seems to always involve 2 guys. Never thought of that, but yeah, it's totally true too! Love triangles are pain anyway! LOL!

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

    1. Yep so painful. I'm sure there are equally as many attractive females as there are males. We need more variations of triangles if we are to enjoy them :)

  9. fun list today, I do like a good romance from time to time--a romance where the couple falls in love slowly and deeply over time. Kelley at the road goes ever ever on

  10. I really don't like how love triangles are always with one girl and two guys as well. It's as if she's a prize waiting to be won. I like it when authors change it up!

    1. Yes, I think we need something different from time to time~ A more unique love triangle will be way more appealing!

  11. I despise love triangles and insta love. They are both just so unrealistic. Heck I can't even get one guy, how am I supposed to get another freakishly hot guy to even look at me! Enemy to lover have got to be my favorite romances though! It's just so cute seeing how haters can turn into lovers.

    1. Same, I also need that realism. That's why haters to lovers are so satisfying! We see more of how the relationship develops :D

  12. Great choices, lady!
You know me, I despise love triangles, so I'm glad to see it on your list! Insta-love gets on my nerves too. Slow burn is aaaaaalways better. :)

    1. We have very similar taste!! Love triangles and instalove are definitely my top two dislikes and slow burn romance is my number one favourite ;)

  13. Insta love and love triangles get on my nerves too. For one thing, insta-love completely lacks development, and love triangles, are, essentially, cheating. If I found out I was part of a love triangle I would break up with someone IMMEDIATELY because it's unfair to everyone. I love slow-burn romance though!:)

    1. Seems we all have very similar tastes! I think love triangles are harder to define since it can go a lot of ways. I don't like that someone has the ultimate power to pick one over the other. It is unfair like you said. :S

  14. I don't understand why there's NEVER a guy deciding between two girls. And I don't mean like two girls where one is genuinely "bad" for the guy and the readers know it. I mean two girls that are actually good, nice, smart, funny, etc. WHY ISN'T THERE THAT CHOICE?

I mean, if you're familiar with One Tree Hill, I like the scenario between BrookexLucasxPeyton, though I wish some things hadn't happened…

Slow burn romance IS the best thing ever. I just love it. I agree with friends to lovers! I don't like enemy to livers though, I just…don't. I'm not fond of forbidden love either, gosh…

    That's such a cute picture!

Well, something that I forgot to mention in my TTT are love triangles with two guys every time, I kept thinking of more throughout the day but I've now forgotten them, gosh. :)

    1. I've never seen One Tree Hill but I know what you mean. We need two guys in a love triangle for once! Thank you and don't worry, I've been seen lots of great ones on other bloggers' lists today :D

  15. Ohhh yes!! love the slow burn!!!!!

  16. Aww... Ripple! We buy our two cats special treats for Valentines Day, ha ha. I adore the best friends into more scenario, too. I loathe grunt, grope, and groan "love" scenes. I don't think that is romantic at all. Bleck

  17. First, you and Ripple are ADORABLE! And you're right we do really like the same stuff. I agree SO much with the annoying constant descriptions too. I get it. Really. I promise I didn't forget about his stupid brown eyes and shaggy hair in the 3 paragraphs since you've last yammered on about them ;) Great list!
