385 pages

Goodreads Summary:
At twenty-two years old, Sydney is enjoying a great life: She’s in college, working a steady job, in love with her wonderful boyfriend, Hunter, and rooming with her best friend, Tori. But everything changes when she discovers that Hunter is cheating on her—and she’s forced to decide what her next move should be.

Soon, Sydney finds herself captivated by her mysterious and attractive neighbor, Ridge. She can't take her eyes off him or stop listening to the passionate way he plays his guitar every evening out on his balcony. And there’s something about Sydney that Ridge can’t ignore, either. They soon find themselves needing each other in more ways than one.

A passionate tale of friendship, betrayal, and romance, Maybe Someday will immerse readers in Sydney’s tumultuous world from the very first page.

Review

Finally I read this one, or rather, I listened to the audiobook. For the longest time, I stayed away from Maybe Someday because I heard the story heavily involved cheating. I really didn't think I'd enjoy a story based on that but then again I've also heard some people loved it. My curiosity won out.

At the start of the book, Sydney finds out her boyfriend has been cheating on her with her best friend so she picks up everything and leaves. Fate then has her moving in with Ridge, her insanely gorgeous and despite being deaf, musically talented sort-of friend. They end up writing music together and develop a connection like no other. A connection not even Ridge and his girlfriend, Maggie have. Yes, Ridge is very much taken. The story then centers on Sydney and Ridge's internal and external struggles to not act on their feelings.

For the majority of the story, my insides were twisted in a knot. It was obvious Sydney and Ridge were in love. It was also obvious that they both had a strong sense of morality. Ridge refuses to give up his love for Maggie. Sydney, having first hand experience in being cheated on, refuses to inflict the same kind of pain she has felt on others. I literally had no clue how things were going to work out.

Ridge and Maggie's history was, I have to say, beautiful. His dedication is such a rare trait. It's very moving to see the amount of thoughts and effort he put into the things he care about. Something spoilery that I've been wondering about is even though Ridge and Sydney are together at the end, what makes her any different than Maggie? If another Sydney comes along, wouldn't Ridge behave the exact same way again? For the people that have read Maybe Someday, what do you think?

I've only read one other Colleen Hoover book (Ugly Love) so I'm not sure what's considered her usual style but this book was very tame in terms of the physicals. It was still rich in emotions though as I've come to learn Colleen Hoover books are.

I don't regret reading Maybe Someday even if it was hard for me to get behind how the story ended. It was quite an enjoyable gut-wrenching read. If the subject of cheating is something you're comfortable with and/or you have a passion for music, then Maybe Someday might be your tune ;)

  5. A lot of people tell me this is one of her better books. I've read both Confess and Hopeless, and I wasn't too keen on them. I did wind up buying Ugly Love, and Maybe Someday--so maybe those will be winners. Great review!

  6. I adore music but cheating boys...erm, not so much. >_< I've read a few more YA-ish ones where they use those sorts of plots and gawsh, it bugs me a lot. I never trust the ones who cheat! What's to stop them doing it again, right?! I totally understand your mixed feelings for this one. :|

  7. Is it bad that I cringe when music is incorporated into books? I find them cheesy at times, so I guess I just haven't found a right one, and I don't mind angsty, but it sounds a little too full of angst, haha. I haven't read any of hers yet (probably won't either, to be honest, since I usually read YA). Glad you enjoyed it though!

    1. I love your honesty! The music part wasn't so bad. Colleen Hoover actually collaborated with a musician and created the songs! I haven't gone on the website but I'm thinking I might visit it one day ;)
