Review: Summer Skin by Kirsty Eagar

Goodreads Summary:
Jess Gordon is out for revenge. Last year the jocks from Knights College tried to shame her best friend. This year she and a hand-picked college girl gang are going to get even.

The lesson: don't mess with Unity girls.

The target: Blondie, a typical Knights stud, arrogant, cold . . . and smart enough to keep up with Jess.

A neo-riot grrl with a penchant for fanning the flames meets a rugby-playing sexist pig - sworn enemies or two people who happen to find each other when they're at their most vulnerable?

It's all Girl meets Boy, Girl steals from Boy, seduces Boy, ties Boy to a chair and burns Boy's stuff. Just your typical love story.

A searingly honest and achingly funny story about love and sex amid the hotbed of university colleges by the award-winning author of Raw Blue.

Review

When the synopsis to a book is vague it captures attention. That's the main reason I picked up Summer Skin and am I ever glad I did! The story was emotionally all-consuming with a high level of enjoyable sass and sizzles.

My favourite part of the book is the interactions between the characters. Major or minor, they made me feel.  From the girls' flirtation with the sweaty construction workers to the besties riddling each other with stories and/or advices, I loved every bit. It was fun but serious when the time called for it.

This book was saucy and the characters had so much personality. Jess and Blondie (that's not his real name) are my favourite type of NA characters. They come off as bold and confident but that doesn't mean they're not vulnerable either. Each of them had their own share of demons to battle and I'm impressed at how Jess handled each one. Blondie, not so much but I'll get to that later.

It was thrilling to watch Jess and Blondie's exchanges. Seeing them volleying insults and profanity at each other was exciting. I love the sexual tension radiating off of them when they're together. I'm slightly confused how people from two different colleges could bump into each other on campus though? Are the colleges that close together? Albeit I'm not complaining since I ate up every time Jess and Blondie were together. The feisty moments, sincere conversations and sexy times were delicious.

I only have one complaint. The story was going so strong until it started to lose steam towards the last quarter. I didn't understand Blondie's behaviour (disappearing for 32 days then coming back to say everything was okay now). Even if he did try to fix things, he went about them the wrong way. Jess acknowledged the hurt he caused her but her decision sort of gets glossed over.  Personally I found it hard to easily forgive and forget so I was somewhat disappointed with the glossed over solution.

I'm very happy my Goodreads browsing led me to Summer Skin. It's definitely an underrated book so if NA is your type, read this book! I'm excited to give the author's other works a go!
