Goodreads Summary:
Being a Sentinel isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens.

Sure, jumping through books into the world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.

And if that isn’t enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.

Maybe. If she survives.

Review

Last year I read Thief of Lies and I enjoyed it enough to want to read the sequel. I really like the idea behind the story and Guardian of Secrets kept my interest alive. A fair warning though- there's a major case of love triangle.

Before starting this second book, I highly suggest revisiting the first one. I didn't do that so things in Guardian of Secrets got a little bit confusing. Regardless I found myself oddly invested in the story. Whether it was searching for the Chiavi or sorting out Gia's romantic entanglements the story kept me reading. I wanted to see each plotline through. At times the story felt a little scattered but there was no shortage of lies, secrets, betrayals and deaths.

One of my favourite thing about this series was being introduced to libraries all over the world. Each one of the libraries the characters visit sound magnificent beyond words. What would it be like to see them in person? I really hope to visit some in the future!

There's already a vast number of characters from Thief of Lies but Ms. Drake adds even more into this second installment. We meet more Sentinels, wizards and Mystiks. As even more clues and information come to light, we're left wondering who's really the bad guys. It's frustrating but I thought Ms. Drake does an excellent job sustaining the unknown and keeping the mysteries alive.

I cannot talk about this book without mentioning the blinding love triangle. Gia loves Arik but she can't help feel a strong connection with Bastien, her betrothed. I don't hate love triangles but this one was really predictable. The conflict and the result were so glaringly obvious I couldn't root for anyone. Not to mention it's kind of hard for me to get behind a new romance when the end to the old one wasn't brought about by a natural reason. The way Gia sways between the two guys is painful to read. I suppose at least she's fair to them.

I know it sounds like I didn't like Guardian of Secrets but I did enjoy it. I look forward to jumping into more grand libraries as well as seeing the final romantic pairing. Assassin of Truths (how cool are all the titles!) better give me a solid ending!

  1. I loved the first book so much. I excited for book two so I can read more about this new life Gia is living. I'm not sure if I'm team Arik or Bastien. I'm leaning towards Arik though.

    Great review!

    1. I'm honestly a bit torn between the two too. It's tough... I hope you enjoy this second book as much as you loved the first one!
