Review: The Girl From Everywhere (The Girl from Everywhere #1) by Heidi Heilig

The Girl from Everywhere by Heidi HeiligThe Girl from Everywhere
(The Girl from Everywhere #1)
by Heidi Heilig
February 16, 2015
464 pages

Goodreads Summary:
Heidi Heilig’s debut teen fantasy sweeps from modern-day New York City to nineteenth-century Hawaii to places of myth and legend. Sixteen-year-old Nix has sailed across the globe and through centuries aboard her time-traveling father’s ship. But when he gambles with her very existence, it all may be about to end. The Girl from Everywhere, the first of two books, will dazzle readers of Sabaa Tahir, Rae Carson, and Rachel Hartman.

Nix’s life began in Honolulu in 1868. Since then she has traveled to mythic Scandinavia, a land from the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, modern-day New York City, and many more places both real and imagined. As long as he has a map, Nix’s father can sail his ship, The Temptation, to any place, any time. But now he’s uncovered the one map he’s always sought—1868 Honolulu, before Nix’s mother died in childbirth. Nix’s life—her entire existence—is at stake. No one knows what will happen if her father changes the past. It could erase Nix’s future, her dreams, her adventures . . . her connection with the charming Persian thief, Kash, who’s been part of their crew for two years. If Nix helps her father reunite with the love of his life, it will cost her her own.

In The Girl from Everywhere, Heidi Heilig blends fantasy, history, and a modern sensibility with witty, fast-paced dialogue, breathless adventure, and enchanting romance.

But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.

Goodreads Summary:
War has begun. Arin is in the thick of it, with the East as his ally and the empire as his enemy. He’s finally managed to dismiss the memory of Kestrel, even if he can’t quite forget her. Kestrel turned into someone he could no longer recognize: someone who cared more for the empire than for the lives of innocent people—and certainly more than she cared for him. At least, that’s what he thinks.

But far north lies a work camp where Kestrel is a prisoner. Can she manage to escape before she loses herself? As the war intensifies, both Kestrel and Arin discover unexpected roles in battle, terrible secrets, and a fragile hope. The world is changing. The East is pitted against the West, and Kestrel and Arin are caught between. In a game like this, can anybody really win?

Which literary kiss do you think I love? Keep reading to find out ;)

You could say I'm his biggest fan ;) I always try to include him in my book hauls which basically means I take all the pictures of him with my books. 2016 Love-a-Thon Kick-Off Questionnaire

2016 Love-a-Thon banner

What’s your name?
Hello, my name is Eileen~

Where in the world are you blogging from?
I'm in Vancouver aka Raincouver, Canada.

How did you get into blogging in the first place?
I've always enjoyed reading and when I discovered book blogs, I was fascinated by the community. It's a place where I can share my thoughts and opinions of books with other book lovers. A place where I can fangirl and vent with others! I'm so glad I decided to join this community because it's been an awesome experience!

How did you come up with your blog name?
When I wanted to start a book blog, I brainstormed a couple names. I really wanted to incorporate my cat so I thought, why not a bookcat? There are already plenty of bookworms out there afterall ;) And to put in a personal touch, I added Pin at the end because it's my nickname. So that's why I'm BookCatPin!

What genre do you read and review the most on your blog?
I read mostly Young Adult and the occasional New Adult. I have also enjoyed a couple Adult books so I'm looking forward to maybe reading more.

Best blogging experience so far?
Meeting amazing people who I am now so proud to call my friends :D

Favorite thing about the blogging community?
The love we all share for books and bookish things!

Name the 5 books you’re most excited for this 2016!
Lady Midnight by Cassandra ClareThe King Slayer by Virginia BoeckerWarrior Witch by Danielle L. Jensen
P.S. I Like You by Kasie WestGirl Against the Universe by Paula Stokes

Which book boy or girl would be your book BFF?
Right now, it's Miss Evelyn Wyndham from These Vicious Masks by Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas because she's got the greatest sense of humour! The perfect blend of snarky and witty XP

Apart from reading, what are your other hobbies or interests?
I love going to the movies or just snuggling on the couch to watch movies and tv shows.

Apart from book shopping, what else do you like shopping for?
Uhhh just books.......

Author you want to meet and sit down to tea with?
I'm a huge fan of the Shadowhunters books by Cassandra Clare so definitely Cassie! Also Victoria Schwab because she's simply brilliant!

Thank you for visiting my blog!

Goodreads Summary:
Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the Tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter will ever know. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the Tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love . . . or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear . . . the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

Now here's my little reimaging of the cover ;)

Goodreads Summary:
Taylor Simmons is screwed.

Things were hard enough when her single-minded dedication to her studies earned her the reputation of being an Ice Queen, but after getting drunk at a party and waking up next to bad boy surfer Evan McKinley, the entire school seems intent on tearing Taylor down with mockery and gossip.

Desperate to salvage her reputation, Taylor persuades Evan to pretend they’re in a serious romantic relationship. After all, it’s better to be the girl who tames the wild surfer than just another notch on his surfboard.

I'm a sucker for stories like this :P Can't wait to see what type of spark will ignite between this bad boy and good girl!

Goodreads Summary:
Maguire is bad luck.

No matter how many charms she buys off the internet or good luck rituals she performs each morning, horrible things happen when Maguire is around. Like that time the rollercoaster jumped off its tracks. Or the time the house next door caught on fire. Or that time her brother, father, and uncle were all killed in a car crash—and Maguire walked away with barely a scratch.

It’s safest for Maguire to hide out in her room, where she can cause less damage and avoid meeting new people who she could hurt. But then she meets Jordy, an aspiring tennis star. Jordy is confident, talented, and lucky, and he’s convinced he can help Maguire break her unlucky streak. Maguire knows that the best thing she can do for Jordy is to stay away. But it turns out staying away is harder than she thought.

From author Paula Stokes comes a funny and poignant novel about accepting the past, embracing the future, and learning to make your own luck.

A story about bad luck sounds very neat! I'm really looking forward to it!
