(Something Strange and Deadly #3)
by Susan Dennard
July 22, 2014
392 pages
Goodreads Summary:
In the conclusion to the trilogy that Publishers Weekly called “a roaring—and addictive—gothic world,” Eleanor Fitt must control her growing power, face her feelings for Daniel, and confront the evil necromancer Marcus...all before it’s too late.
With supernatural forces, epic romance, and a mysterious Egyptian city, Eleanor and her team are set for an adventure they will never forget.
It has been a tumultuous time for Eleanor Fitt since life as she knew it in Philadelphia came abruptly to an end. Although the Spirit-Hunters Joseph, Jie, and Daniel have helped her survive, Eleanor has lost just about everything.
And now, Jie is missing taken by the evil necromancer Marcus. Eleanor is determined not only to get her back but to finally end this nightmare. To do so, she must navigate the hot desert streets of nineteenth-century Egypt amid the rising Dead, her unresolved feelings for Daniel, and her volatile relationships with Joseph and Oliver, her demon. And it won't be easy. Because Allison, her friend from Philadelphia, has tagged along, becoming strangely entangled in Eleanor's mission.
It will take all of Eleanor's powers of black magic, and all of Daniel's and Joseph's trust, to succeed. But there will be a price.

Review
I am so in love with this trilogy. It's been such a thrilling experience getting to follow the wonderful characters on their journey through magnificent cities. I'm sad to see Strange and Ever After wrap up the story but it's a good conclusion.
Right on the tail of the events in A Darkness Strange and Lovely, the gang scales mountains and cross deserts to chase Marcus down and save Jie, Time and again they find themselves in horrible situations and just managing to overcome the dangers. There was never a dull moment. Seeing Eleanor and the Spirit-Hunters make preparations for the ultimate battle drove the finality of the story home. The showdown was epic. The queen's guards were a tremendous help therefore I wish we got to know how Oliver obtained the queen's clappers. It just felt a little too easy in the grand scheme of things. I also wish the price for victory wasn't so high.
Daniel, the biggest heartache in Strange and Ever After and perhaps the whole trilogy. I understand why Ms. Dennard did what she did. It was hinted here and there but I'm still heartbroken over it. I was right there screaming with Eleanor on that dock . It was entirely too unfair how willing Daniel went. But knowing Eleanor will always love him lessens the blow to my heart.
Oliver goes above and beyond for Eleanor in Strange and Ever After. He went as far as sacrificing his demon soul to save her and the rest of the gang. I'm disappointed his relationship with Eleanor is left kind of hazy. In my gut though I know their feelings can't really be defined given what they've been through together. I'm content knowing no matter what they still have each other.
I don't even know what to say about Eleanor. She's been so brave throughout the whole story arc. Having lost her brother, her mother, essentially everything, she still soldiers on and faces the world bravely. She isn't unafraid and her fear is what makes her real and relatable.
I highly recommend the Something Strange and Deadly trilogy to all readers. It is an enthralling story with incredible characters on daring adventures set in beautiful backdrops. Don't miss out on these books!
