(Air Awakens: Vortex Chronicles #3)
by Elise Kova
July 21, 2019
Goodreads Summary:
When worlds collide, and things are rarely what they seem, there may be no one Vi can trust.
Having forsaken her crown for a chance to save her family, and the world, Vi Solaris washes up on the shores of Meru. She's wounded and barely alive. But Vi's fight for survival is only just beginning.
As a princess in a foreign land, everyone is after her.
The pirate queen Adela wants to sell her to the evil elfin'ra. The Twilight King wants to use her to settle an old score. And, perhaps most dangerous, is the scheming Lord of the Faithful who sees her as an opportunity to further consolidate his power.
The only path for Vi is forward. But she doesn't yet know if she's running toward salvation... or a brutal end to everything she loves.
Vi's journey continues with even more betrayal, romance, magic, and a twist you never saw coming that leaves readers begging for the next book.

Review
Elise Kova's writing has always been engaging for me so it came as no surprise that Failed Future was no less thrilling than its predecessors. Every time I think I knew what was coming next unexpected things happened.
Failed Future picks up right where Chosen Champion left off. Vi and Taavin finally meet but many obstacles stand in their way (of saving the world). An important one being their feelings for each other. They're both first-timers in the romance department but they don't let it fill their heads completely. I wasn't a fan of Vi and Taavin's miscommunications but I could see why they'd go about things in their own ways. It caused a lot of grief but there's a certain tautness in their relationship that I thought was well-done.
I really enjoyed discovering new lands with Vi. She's exposed to new worlds and meets new friends/foes. Travelling into the Twilight Kingdom, through the Isle of Frost and finally to Risen were all quite the adventure. I especially loved meeting the morphi - such a riveting species.
I have mixed feelings with the big twist in Failed Future. It was both surprising because I wasn't expect it and not that shocking given I've come to learn anything's possible in the Air Awakens world. I suggest rereading Vortex Visions as it would help with understanding the twist which would hopefully add to your reading experience of this continuation in the series. Thinking back there were tiny hints but to me it feels a little like a cop out. I am still keen to find out how it'll be worked into the overall storyline though.
Elise's got her work cut out for her with the twist she threw at us at the end of Failed Future. The title of the next book alone has me both excited and scared. But I will for sure be picking up Sovereign Sacrifice when the time comes.
