Goodreads Summary:
In an empire on the brink of war...
Ahn is no one, with no past and no family.
Altan is a lost heir, his future stolen away as a child.
When they meet, Altan sees in Ahn a path to reclaiming the throne. Ahn sees a way to finally unlock her past and understand her arcane magical abilities.
But they may have to pay a far deadlier price than either could have imagined.
Ferocious action, shadowy intrigue, and a captivating romance collide in June CL Tan’s debut, a stunning homage to the Xianxia novel with a tender, beating heart, perfect for fans of The Bone Witch and We Hunt the Flame.
Review
I grew up on wuxia dramas and Jade Fire Gold definitely has all the components- action, romances and a good old revenge ploy. While the story was a bit slow at times, I still had fun reading this one.
What I Liked:
- love the wuxia feel
- drama-worthy plot
- many morally grey issues
- some great character growths- the struggles!
- LGBTQ romances
- main romance was subtle but filled with some good longing
- wonderfully fun side characters
- nice plot twist with the swords
The Not So Much:
- timing and pacing sometimes felt off
- parts of the story were quite predictable
- the epilogue (can we please keep this book as the standalone it was marketed as?)
"History is never written by its victims." (p. 35)
"Little has changed, but nothing remains the same." (p.154)
"Wishing is pointless. Praying is for fools. I am the only one who can control my fate." (p. 305)
