Goodreads Summary:
Fall in love, break the curse.

Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year, Prince Rhen, the heir of Emberfall, thought he could be saved easily if a girl fell for him. But that was before he turned into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. Before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, Harper learned to be tough enough to survive. When she tries to save a stranger on the streets of Washington, DC, she's pulled into a magical world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

Harper doesn't know where she is or what to believe. A prince? A curse? A monster? As she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what's at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

Review

As always with a hyped book I was very wary going into A Curse So Dark and Lonely. I can absolutely see why this series is so popular! Asides from the formidable characters, the story is ripe with emotions, particularly longing.

What I Liked:
- the imaginative writing
- action-packed
- it's all about choices
- a very inspiring story
- Harper's resilience- you go girl!
- the men are very polite
- the different sides of Rhen:
   - a cunning strategist
   - his devotion to his people
   - his (attempts at) shielding Grey and Harper
- Grey is the best of the best:
   - his unwavering loyalty to Rhen
   - his incomparable bravery and strength
   - such skills with weaponries
   - his patience and guidance of Harper
   - he's just so darn dreamy!
- how much Harper and Rhen suited each other:
   - the push and pull
   - their meaningful conversations
- there's humour to be found even in the bleakest of times
-did I mention Grey?

The Not So Much:
- I didn't really dislike it but I was quite torn by the not so subtle love triangle

"Words spoken in the dark in the middle of the night always feel so much heavier than they would at any other time." (p. 96)

"There was something about knowing how long you have to suffer that was better than just waiting." (p. 179)

"The choices we face may not be the choices we want, but they are choices nonetheless." (p. 188)

4.5 Cats
