Goodreads Summary:
She’s got his back.
Hannah Brooks looks more like a kindergarten teacher than somebody who could kill you with a wine bottle opener. Or a ballpoint pen. Or a dinner napkin. But the truth is, she’s an Executive Protection Agent (aka "bodyguard"), and she just got hired to protect superstar actor Jack Stapleton from his middle-aged, corgi-breeding stalker.

He’s got her heart.
Jack Stapleton’s a household name—captured by paparazzi on beaches the world over, famous for, among other things, rising out of the waves in all manner of clingy board shorts and glistening like a Roman deity. But a few years back, in the wake of a family tragedy, he dropped from the public eye and went off the grid.

They’ve got a secret.
When Jack’s mom gets sick, he goes home to the family’s Texas ranch to help out. Only one catch: He doesn’t want his family to know about his stalker. Or the bodyguard thing. And so Hannah—against her will and her better judgment—finds herself pretending to be Jack’s girlfriend as a cover. Even though her ex, says no one will believe it.

What could possibly go wrong?
Hannah hardly believes it, herself. But the more time she spends with Jack, the more real it all starts to seem. And there lies the heartbreak. Because it’s easy for Hannah to protect Jack. But protecting her own, long-neglected heart? That’s the hardest thing she’s ever done.

Review

I must confess, I started reading The Bodyguard because I heard it was being adapted into a movie with an actor and an actress I like. When I read the synopsis, I couldn’t figure out why I didn’t immediately pick up the copy sitting on my shelf. I really wish I read The Bodyguard sooner because I ended up adoring it so much.

What I Liked:
- a most heartwarming story
- the emotions hit in all the right places
- amazing characters
- Hannah was excellent at her job
- hilarious dialogues
- Hannah Brooks cracked me up! (I laughed out loud so many times)
- Jack Stapleton with all his handsomeness and sweetness
- Hannah and Jack’s conversations
- Glenn was a little mean but quite wise
- the many realizations Hannah came to (she’s lovable)
- some healing (friendship among other things)
- full circle moments
- Kelly’s eagerness and Doghouse’s retorts went hand in hand

The Not So Much:
- I wish the book was much longer!
- I would’ve liked to see more of Hannah and Jack as a couple

“All to say, my job is not about violence, it’s about avoiding violence. It’s much more about brains than brawns. It’s about preparation, observation, and constant vigilance. It’s about predictions, and patterns, and reading the room before you’re even in it. It’s not just something you do, it’s something you are…” (p. 13)

“People loving you for your best qualities is not the same as people loving you despite your worst.” (p. 173)

“I think, now, I’m going to try thinking about what I can carry forward. What I can hold onto. Not just only always what I have to leave behind.” (p. 240)

4.5 Cats
