Goodreads Summary:
When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war among gods, to seal their fate forever.
After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.
To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish—into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.
Shadow and Bone meets Lore in Rebecca Ross's Divine Rivals, an epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak, and the unparalleled power of love.
Review
Divine Rivals is a hopelessly romantic story full of willpower, tender moments and deadly choices. After reading it, it's easy to see why this book is so popular. Divine Rivals deserves a gold medal for all the feelings it evokes.
What I Liked:
- the eloquent writing
- such creativity!
- a most believable and not overly complex backstory of the gods
- realistic situations that elicited overwhelming emotions:
- the tangible fear in the atmosphere throughout the story
- the destructive power of war
- so much despair in the war zones
- gaining hope from the smallest things
- the beautiful romance full of light
- the unbreakable bond between Iris and Roman
- heartfelt friendships
- epic quotes (see below)
The Not So Much:
- the ache in my heart from the cliffhanger ending *sniffles*
"Pages that smelled like dust and tombs and places that could be reached only in the dark." (p.33)
"And I'm not afraid to be alone, but I'm tired of being the one left behind." (p.83)
"Your grief will never fully fade; it will always be with you- a shadow you carry in your soul- but it will become fainter as your life becomes brighter. You will learn to live outside of it again, as impossible as that may sound." (p. 87)
"And when you find something good? You hold on to it. You don't waste time worrying about things that won't even matter in the end. Rather, you take a risk for that light." (p. 149)
"It's not a crime to feel joy, even when things seem hopeless." (p. 284)
Ooh nice! Yeah...I had a feeling this one would have a cliffhanger! Lol. I've the FL version of this waiting for me but I thought it best to wait til I have the sequel too! Nice review!
