Review

Cuteness all around for The Replacement Crush! It's definitely a perfect book for readers who love swoons. This book nailed it; I swooned so hard and multiple times ;)

The Replacement Crush would appeal to Star Trek fans too. The characters are big Trekkies and refer to the show and its characters quite often. Vivian even goes so far as to use Spock as her guide in love. No matter how misguided that was it turned out to be a highlight of the story. She does an excellent job of imitating Spock's logical voice.

There is excellent flirtation in The Replacement Crush. Vivian and Dallas had the best back and forth banter. The slow build up was delicious. So tempting. It was tense and cute all at once. I swear we'd be able to see the attraction crackling and sizzling between them if we were present during the Vivian/Dallas moments. It was intensely swoony.

A complaint about the story was the pacing. It started off nice but then dragged a bit. I was quite frustrated watching Vivian's countless hesitations and Dallas's silent fuming. So many near-misses and unspoken/cut-off words. I wanted to smush their heads together already. There was also some unnecessary drama the book could've done without but I didn't let that bother me too much.

What I loved as much as the romance between Vivian and Dallas was the friendship between Vivian and her almost-stepbrother Toff. A plain genuine friendship between a boy and a girl. They cared for each other with no ulterior motives. Nothing more, nothing less.

The Replacement Crush also touched lightly on double standards placed on gender. It didn't go too deep but I appreciate it was brought to attention. It's important to be able to speak one's mind and have others listen (and voice their opinions even if they don't agree).

I had the best swoony time reading The Replacement Crush. How I wish it didn't have to end! Despite the story's slower pacing and sudden drama near the end, the swoons and cuteness outweighed those and catapulted this book onto my favourite contemporary list!

4.5 Cats

Lisa Brown RobertsAbout the Author
Lisa Brown Roberts still hasn't recovered from the teenage trauma of nearly tweezing off both eyebrows and having to pencil them in for an entire school year. This and other angst-filled memories inspire her to write YA books about navigating life's painful and funny dramas, and falling in love along the way.

Her almost forever home is Colorado, though she occasionally pines for the days when she lived within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean. Her house is full of books, boys, four-legged prima donnas, and lots of laughter.

  2. I always thought the cover of this book looked cute, but I didn't know the actual story was that sweet. I'm adding it to my TBR now!
