Goodreads Summary:
A spellbinding story of truce and trickery from the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Paper Magician series.

Enna knows to fear the mystings that roam the wildwood near her home. When one tries to kill her to obtain an enchanted stone, Enna takes a huge risk: fighting back with a mysting of her own.

Maekallus’s help isn’t free. His price? A kiss. One with the power to steal her soul. But their deal leaves Maekallus bound to the mortal realm, which begins eating him alive. Only Enna’s kiss, given willingly, can save him from immediate destruction. It’s a temporary salvation for Maekallus and a lingering doom for Enna. Part of her soul now burns bright inside Maekallus, making him feel for the first time.

Enna shares Maekallus’s suffering, but her small sacrifice won’t last long. If she and Maekallus can’t break the spell binding him to the mortal realm, Maekallus will be consumed completely—and Enna’s soul with him.

Review

I happened upon The Will and the Wilds by chance on Goodreads and was lucky enough to receive a copy from the publisher, thank you! I'm very happy to say I enjoyed it a lot. The story was original with a unique world and a romance that will pull at your heart strings.

When I first delve into the world of The Will and the Wilds I thought it was your typical fantasy setting. However, as the mystings were introduced I found myself really taken in. Especially by the concept of the crossover between the mortal realm and the demon world. So simple yet interesting.

The one word that best describes Enna is kind. Even though her soul was bound to Maekallus, she totally went above and beyond herself to help a demon. I loved her determination and resourcefulness. Enna, with her gentle and caring nature was the shining star of The Will and the Wilds.

In case anyone wonders, there is definitely a romance in this book. It's very gradual and so subtle. Uncertainties always existed between Enna and Maekallus but that couldn't stop them from developing feelings for each other. Theirs is a bittersweet love story done right.

Maekallus's past confused me. I didn't see its relevance to the story besides it satisfying Enna's/readers' curiosity? Even then the bit that we got was sadly underwhelming. Maekallus was quite an enigma too so too bad the subplot of his background felt so murky.

Despite some minor issues I had, The Will and the Wilds was an engrossing read. It's been a while since I've found a new author to love. I very much look forward to what Ms. Charlie N. Holmberg will put out next.
