Goodreads Summary:
Stop the Magician.
Steal the book.
Save the future.

In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she's been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta's training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

Deleted Scene

It was the kind of day New York was made for—crisp with the promise of the warmth of spring coming on the breeze—but Harte was still in too foul a mood to care. What did it matter if the sun had finally come out? The streets were still clogged with the deafening racket of traffic, and the air still held the sulfurous fog of soot and ash from the streetcars and trains.

At the corner, he gave a vendor a couple of coins for an orange, and he automatically dug his thumbnail into the smooth, waxy skin, peeling it as he walked. Only when that first bright note of citrus hit his nose, cutting through the grime and heavy stench of the city, did he finally let the stress of the afternoon recede. He made short work of the peel, dropping the pieces of brightly colored rind like a trail of breadcrumbs back to the theater, to his real life.

He took his time eating the orange, letting each plump segment remind him that there were places in the world where trees bore fruit that tasted like the sun. Letting himself believe that one day he’d see them.

The restaurant was a glossy-looking place, all brass and leather with heavy French dishes that he knew wouldn’t satisfy him half as well as the orange had. Jack was right where Harte expected to find him, eating in his usual lunch in his usual corner table. If the empty glasses in front of him were any indication, he’d already gone through at least two drinks.

When the maître d’ showed him to the table, Jack looked up, his eyes bloodshot and a little glassy. “Darrigan?”

“Fancy seeing you here, Jack,” Harte said with false surprise. As though this wasn’t the very table they’d first shared, months ago when Jack had sent a note backstage to commend Harte on his act and invite him to luncheon. As though the they hadn’t met at this very place a handful of times since, any time Jack wanted to talk over some new theory or development. At first, Harte had gone because he thought it couldn’t hurt to have friends in high places, but after the night Dolph had told him about the Book, Harte had used the meetings to his own advantage. To lay the groundwork for friendship and, he hoped, trust.

Of course, those meetings were always at Jack’s invitation, but after the way Jack had left things at the Metropolitan, after not hearing from Jack for a few days, Harte wasn’t taking any chances.

“I was about to get something to eat myself,” he told Jack. “Mind if I join you?”

“Oh, I—” Jack started, but Harte didn’t give him time to refuse. He simply took the open seat and waved the waiter over for a menu.
