Goodreads Summary:
Cvareh returns home to his sky world of Nova with the genius crafter Arianna as his temperamental guest. The mercurial inventor possesses all the Xin family needs to turn the tides of a centuries-old power struggle, but the secrets she harbors must be earned with trust -- hard to come by for Ari, especially when it comes to Dragons. On Nova, Ari finds herself closer to exacting vengeance against the traitor who killed everything -- and everyone – she once loved. But before Ari can complete her campaign of revenge, the Crimson Court exposes her shadowed past and reveals something even more dangerous sparking between her and Cvareh.

While Nova is embroiled in blood sport and political games, the rebels on Loom prepare for an all-out assault on their Dragon oppressors. Florence unexpectedly finds herself at the forefront of change, as her unique blend of skills -- and quick-shooting accuracy -- makes her a force to be reckoned with. For the future of her world, she vows vengeance against the Dragons.

Before the rebellion can rise, though, the Guilds must fall.

Re-imagining Dragons

Dragons in literature is something I find truly fascinating in just how many forms it ends up taking across all mediums. You have folklore across multiple cultures and countries telling stories involving dragons and their capabilities. In modern times, you see dragons in everything from Hollywood films to literature. But what I love about dragons is that they always seem to adapt.

There's literal fire-breathing scaley beasts like you see in How to Train Your Dragon. There's the use of "Dragon" as a title, like in Avatar the Last Airbender (which my friends have finally made me watch for the first time, cross that off my "geeky list of shame") where Iroh is sometimes called "The Dragon of the West".

For me, a love affair with Dragons started young. DEALING WITH DRAGONS, the first book in a middle grade series, first planted my idea of dragons in literature. I inherited THE DRAGON RIDERS OF PERN from my sister slightly thereafter, and I was captivated by the idea of those who took to the skies on the backs of a dragon. It never left me; from the "Dragon" as a title in Naomi Novik's UPROOTED to our unburnt queen in A Song of Ice and Fire, I've simply loved dragons.

So, when it came to creating my magical race in the Loom Saga, Dragons ended up being the inspiration. I played on ideas of Dragons hoarding gold (as gold plays particular importance in the Loom Saga). I utilized in-world folklore to imply that the Fenthri created their gliders in the shape they did to inspire images of the Dragon's namesake. While they are humanoid, I made their skin brightly colored and magic offering scales.

It was a fun exercise, and I'm pleased with what I ended up with as a final product in the Loom Saga.
