Goodreads Summary:
Hunted and desperate.

Abel only has one mission left that matters: save the life of Noemi Vidal. To do that, he not only has to escape the Genesis authorities, he also must face the one person in the galaxy who still has the means to destroy him. Burton Mansfield's consciousness lives on, desperate for a home, and Abel's own body is his last bargaining chip.

Alone in the universe.

Brought back from the brink of death, Noemi Vidal finds Abel has not only saved her life, but he's made her into something else, something more. Not quite mech, yet not quite human any longer, Noemi must find her place in a universe where she is utterly unique, all while trying to create a world where anyone--even a mech--can be free.

The final battle between Earth and the colony planets is here, and there's no lengths to which Earth won't go to preserve its domination over all humanity. But together, the universe's most advanced mech and its first human-mech hybrid might have the power to change the galaxy for good.

Review

Sci-fi's not my favourite genre but the Constellation series is fantastic. It's so underrated I wish more people would read it! Defy the Fates is a death-defying conclusion befitting the imaginative adventure that started in Defy the Stars.

The story is fast-paced with action after action. Every moment was full of urgency and sometimes desperation but with a hopeful undertone. The unknown was super thrilling. The pacing never faltered. I held my breath hoping things would turn out well and just praying the characters I've come to love so much would survive.

Noemi and Abel are one of the most deserving pairs I've read. Despite their own struggles, they were always trying to help others. I've said this before but I will say it again because it couldn't be truer: Noemi and Abel are such selfless beings. Uniting the unlikeliest band of misfits and outlaws they gave everything to save humanity. "There's always one core purpose in our hearts that we'll sacrifice anything for." (p. 337). I am so happy and extremely honoured to share in their journey and see it to the end with them.

Claudia Gray does an amazing job describing the technical elements of the story. The cybernetics talks were advanced but never too complicated to follow and the mech technology was easy to understand. Defy the Fates raised some morality issues which I found were properly approached and appropriately debated.

As is custom with this series I have to talk about the cover change. I am not a fan of the (half) faces but I do like the colour palette they chose for Defy the Fates. It's still not as stunning as the original cover of book one but I guess it'll do. The space-y vibe is there.

Defy the Fates was the perfect farewell to this world-defying space adventure. The Constellation series has been a thrill ride from start to finish. The ending is beautiful but I'm still going to miss the worlds!
