Goodreads Summary:

When a guy named Martin Nathaniel Munroe II texts you, it should be obvious who you're talking to. Except there's two of them (it's a long story), and Haley thinks she's talking to the one she doesn't hate.

A question about a class project rapidly evolves into an all-consuming conversation. Haley finds that Martin is actually willing to listen to her weird facts and unusual obsessions, and Martin feels like Haley is the first person to really see who he is. Haley and Martin might be too awkward to hang out in real life, but over text, they're becoming addicted to each other.

There's just one problem: Haley doesn't know who Martin is. And Martin doesn't know that Haley doesn't know. But they better figure it out fast before their meet-cute becomes an epic meet-disaster...

Review

Contemporary YA romances is easily my favourite to read so Technically, You Started It really sparked my interest when I read its synopsis. It sounded adorable and totally a me read.

Technically, You Started It wasn't quite what I imagined it to be. The story's actually written completely in text messaging format. I'm not calling it a con but I was definitely surprised when I opened up the pages. With this particular formatting the story read really quickly but sadly it didn't feel very engaging.

I skimmed through parts of Technically, You Started It because I just didn't care for some of the conversation the characters were having. The topics were kind of boring. At the same time, I didn't think any meaningful connection could be made through texting but the story achieves it. The uncertainty of an online friendship permeated the air but I could feel the two characters growing closer as they shared more personal details of their lives with each other.

For the purpose of the story and the format of the novel, the twist in Technically, You Started It worked pretty well. It wasn't hard to figure out but knowing it before the characters allowed me to observe them better. Their reactions felt authentic.

Featuring a format I don't normally read Technically, You Started It managed to leave an impression with me. Although I did not care for parts of the dialogue, the story was refreshing and relatable with its high school setting.
