Review: The Star Thief (Star Thief Chronicles #1) by Jamie Grey

I randomly picked this book up a couple months ago because I had seen a few good reviews on it. Let me tell you that it did not disappoint! I want to share this review because the second book is out this week and something special is coming tomorrow :)

Goodreads Summary:
Stealing another galactic secret will get her arrested, but playing by the rules might just get her killed.

At twenty-three, Renna Carrizal is the most notorious thief in the galaxy. There's just one problem - all she wants is to get out of the business.

But after Renna rescues an injured boy on her final job, she finds herself on the run from the mob instead of enjoying retirement. She unwittingly becomes ensnared by MYTH, a top-secret galactic protection agency who offer her a choice - either help them on their latest mission, or spend the rest of her life on a prison ship.

Forced to work under the watchful eye of handsome but arrogant Captain Finn, Renna learns the former mercenary-turned-hero has a few dirty secrets himself. As Renna works to discover the truth about Finn's past and keep the tantalizing man at arm's length, she unearths a plot to create an unstoppable army. The target? The human star fleet.

Now Renna must pull off the biggest job of her career - saving the galaxy. And maybe even herself.

Review

This was my first sci-fi read and I was totally absorbed. All the technology talk from the book made me feel smart reading about them haha. The world sounded similar to the Star Wars universe but it was so much fun to read about.

From the start to the end of the book, Renna's confidence and cockiness were so admirable. I love a heroine like her. She's not afraid to show what she's got and she definitely shows what she wants. She's pretty fierce but has a soft side too. I loved her determination to see things through.

Finn just oozes masculinity even though he was a jerk in the beginning. He definitely redeemed himself when he protected Renna. Who doesn't love a good strong man ;) The sexual tension between Renna and Finn was incredible! It was hot and heavy and impossible to turn away from. They're so made for each other.

The plot itself was exciting because of the mystery surrounding Myka. It kept me guessing and doubting. The idea of the drug was neat and it was clever of Jamie Gray to incorporate it into the story for creating the hybrid army. I was a little disappointed however when the villains were revealed. It wasn't that Navang was the bad guy that was disappointing (Aldani had already briefly hinted at that in the beginning) but rather MYTH's involvement. I guessed it before I was half way through the book. This may be a result of me being a tv child though :P You don't get away with something this huge unless some bigger entity is in on it.

Despite the predictability of the plot, this book still kept me on edge. Even now I can't help but wonder if Larson was really a baddie or if he's getting framed. Will Viktis, who turned out to be surprisingly likeable, remain loyal or does he have a side agenda? I need the next book now and I can't wait to see where this story is going!!

  5. I'm glad you greatly enjoyed this one, Eileen. Sci-fi novels can be a hit or miss for me, but I'd keep this one in mind if ever I need a sci-fi read. It's really promising to know that despite its predictability, it still got you hanging on its clutches. Great review, Eileen! (:
