Goodreads Summary:
Fan-favorite author Bree Despain continues her modern-day romance trilogy inspired by the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades with this second book in her Into the Dark series.

Haden Lord, the disgraced Prince of the Underrealm, has chosen love over honor and will do everything in his power to protect Daphne Raines, the human girl he was supposed to bring to the Underrealm. Haden’s choice is put to the test as the Skylords and a figure from his past arrive in Olympus Hills with a plan that could destroy all of the realms.

Embracing her destiny as the Cypher, Daphne begins to understand the immense power of her musical ability to control the elements, but she must come to terms with her feelings for Haden and what she must sacrifice in order to protect him and her friends.

Believing the Key of Hades is the only thing that can stop the Underrealm Court from releasing the monstrous Keres on the mortal world, Haden, Daphne, and their friends set out to find the Key before Persephone’s Gate opens again on the spring equinox.

Q & A with Bree

1. Have you always wanted to be a writer?
I have always enjoyed writing, but I didn't know that I wanted to be a writer. When I was kid, I had never met an author, and it didn't really dawn on me until I was much older that authors were actually real, everyday people. I come from a theatre background and I ended up rediscovering my love for writing when I took a semester off college to write and direct plays for a summer program that served at-risk, inner-city kids. I spent the summer writing crazy little plays for the kids--one was a Cinderrella murder mystery--and by the end of the program, I realized that writing was what made me happy. I returned to college with the desire to become an author who wrote fun things for kids and teens.
2. Can you talk a little bit about your writing process.
My writing process has been different for every single book I have written--and I'm on my eighth book! I feel like my process is to reinvent my process every single time. One of these days, I am going to run out of ways to reinvent how to write a book, and then where will I be? One thing my writing process has had in common over the last few books is speed writing. I am naturally a very slow writer (like 500 words a day) but since I usually have really tight deadlines, I've had to train myself to write much faster (like 2000 to 4000 words a day). In order to do this, I challenge myself to at least one (if not two or three) speed writing sessions a day. I set a timer and try to write 1000 words in one hour. This really helps me turn off my internal editor and just get words on to the page without second guessing myself. Those words can always be fixed later.
3. What inspired you to write a modern version of Hades and Persephone's story?
The Death Cab for Cutie song "I will follow you into the dark." This is one of my favorite songs and it got me thinking about what it would be like to have to ask someone to follow you into the dark (or the unknown) for the sake of love. I'm a big mythology buff so eventually this line of thinking reminded me of the Persephone and Hades myth. I wanted to explore some of the earlier versions of this myth that say that Persephone chose to go into the Underworld, rather than being kidnapped and brought there against her will.
4. Please use three words to describe the Into the Dark series.
Choose your destiny
5. Can you give us a hint of what's to come next in the story? :D
More adventure, more angst, maybe a god or two, a Valentine's Dance, and little bit of Veronica Mars inspired detective work.  :)

I love me some detective work ;) Thank you so much Bree for taking your time to be here today!
