Tabby Talk: Taking Notes~

Tabby Talk is a discussion post I thought I'd do occasionally where I'll share my random thoughts on something and include my cat in them ;)

Today I'm curious how everyone track their thoughts while reading. I know a lot of people use sticky notes to mark pages with quotes and/or passages they love but do you physically take any notes? When something you read stands out, do you have to write it down or do you just remember it?

For me, usually when a thought hits, I need to immediately grab my phone and jot it down in the notepad app. If I don't, I'll end up completely forgetting it in the next five minutes. That's happened to me a couple times and every time I end up hating myself. I feel like I forgot something great (but probably not).

So do you take notes? Do you use a notebook, post-its or even multiple bookmarks? If not, how do you remember everything that happens in the book? Is there anything you have to have beside you when you're reading? Mine's that orange ball of fur in the picture below ;) I'd love it if he could help me take notes but he's normally in that position~ Anyways, I would love to hear a little about your review process!

  1. I never used to use Goodreads for currently reading books (I usually read books in one sitting, so there didn't seem like much of a reason), but since blogging my reading habits have changed so that I'm usually reading a couple books at any given time. This means that I usually have time to update my status on Goodreads, so I try to remember to write something on the updates every time something strikes me or if there was a quote/passage I liked. I'm like you - if I don't mark it down (or highlight it on the kindle when I'm using that) I will totally forget within like...seconds haha! I'm a nanny and the seven year-old I nanny is constantly flabbergasted that I don't remember things in minute detail. He can like recite entire passages from memory after reading something once. HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?? It makes me feel very unaccomplished haha!

    1. I really wish I had enough time and quiet to read books in one sitting! I used to put everything up on Goodreads too but since starting my blog, I have somewhere else to put my thoughts first :)

The boy has a good memory! It's probably because he's so young right??? Hehe~

  2. I have a physical notebook & pen near me - I usually read at my desk, so it's easy to jot down quotes or thoughts for a review real fast If I'm away from home I still use notes tucked into the book. Guess I'm a paper person. :) But whatever works.

    1. I wish I could read at my desk! But I'm one of those people that can't sit still and have to change positions many time so the table's isn't all that comfortable :( Notes in the book sounds like a really great way!!

  3. I generally don't take notes or anything --- I either remember or I don't by the time I get to the next book. I always remember things from the beginning of the book by the time I finish, but I do often forget important bits by the time I go to read the next book or two in a series.

Notes probably aren't a bad idea, but I'm such a slow reader to begin with that I would take FOREVER to finish if I took the time to write notes. And when I'm listening to audiobooks, I'm usually multitasking in a way that I CAN'T jot things down (like driving, cooking, or cleaning).

  4. I never take notes while reading, unless I'm reading with the laptop next to me, because then I do GR updates as I hit relevant bits here and there!

  5. I have a notebook with tons of favorite quotes! I also highlight them on my kindle so I can go back and find them.

    1. I'd love to sneak a peek at your notebook! It sounds so awesome :D Kindle highlighting is the best function ever~ I use it a lot too.

  6. I take notes down in a notepad when I read, but only if I am planning on writing a review or if I come across an awesome quote...I am a pretty fast reader so I don't necessarily always take down notes about things I like/don't like. Just most of the time. Great post :-)

    1. Sometimes I read a book really fast that I forget to write down anything lol. It makes it hard if I have to write a review but hey the book must be good if I was so absorbed ;)

  7. Taking it's is an a soot must for me. I tend to have a very short memory so if I don't write a point I want to touch on down then I'll forget it. I actually love my Ebooks since I can just keep them highlighted in the ebook. For some reason my sons sees my note tabs and book marks as things that must be removed and hidden. He takes them AlLL THE TIME!

    1. Definitely! I wish I had a photographic memory when it comes to reading! LOL your son is adorable!! Just maybe not when you need your notes haha ;)

  8. I don't take notes of any sort. Sometimes I think I should, since I do tend to forget certain points as I read further, but I like to just read straight through and let the story catch me. If I were to take notes or highlight quotes, I'd use the feature on my Kindle to do that. I do it that way for beta reading.

    1. I hear you! Sometimes I just want to read on and on, If something is truly memorable then I pause to jot it down. With ebooks I definitely use the highlighting feature!

  9. I take notes, for sure! I have a journal specifically for this reason. I tried taking notes on my phone, but technology doesn't work for me. Not that the tech is faulty or it's user error, I just don't think ' Oh I should write this down, let me pick up my phone.' I need good ol' pen and paper.

    1. I wish I stuck to pen and paper like you! My phone is usually by my side so that's why I end up using it to take notes instead of hunting down the pen and paper ;)

  10. When I first started book blogging I would make notes on a notepad, but quickly gave that up after the first few books. I now use either the highlight feature on my Kindle, or highlight in the physical book and make a notation. If I've already prepped the review and I have immediate access, I sometimes go in and jot down a phrase or two I know I want to address in the review so that I won't forget to incorporate it.

    1. I also prep my review ahead of times if possible! I have tid bits of notes in there and later on I incorporate my notebook notes into it :D

  11. I do! I didn't used to, but I find that since I started blogging, I NEED the notes. (Maybe it comes with age too ;) ) But I use a notebook that I keep right by my bed, so that if I need to jot down a thought or a page number, it's right there. It has been really helpful, especially when it has been a long time between reading and the actual review! Great discussion :)

    1. Yes!! My mind usually needs a little stirring if it's been some time since I read the book. Notes are so helpful but sometimes I end up also skimming the book again! Who doesn't love a reread ;)
