Tabby Talk: Cover Changes

Tabby Talk button

Tabby Talk is a discussion post I thought I'd do occasionally where I'll share my random thoughts on something and include my cat in them ;)

As a book lover who constantly stares at her bookshelves, it brings me joy and makes me giddy to see that my book series match. So what really bugs me is when publishers change the cover designs. This of course, only applies to series. Standalones don't have to match but it's nice to see some authors have similar cover style to each of their standalones. I know I'm not the first one to talk about this but why do publishers change the cover designs mid-series?

Let's look at The Worldwalker Trilogy by Josephine Angelini below as an example. Personally I love both of these covers. I have no complaints with how they look on their own. What gets to me is that they're part of a series but they don't look like it. Not taking into account how good the story may be, the cover change alone significantly decreases the likelihood I'll purchase and read these books.

And you know what's worse? When the design of the paperback of book one changes to match the new cover of book two. I'm a diehard hardcover person. It pains me to say this but if I can't have the books matching in every way, I'm not gonna get them.

So what do you think? Am I just too picky? Are you like me? How much do cover changes affect you?

  1. This is actually why I mostly get either boxed sets or e-books, then I don't have to worry about it LOL! I don't think you are being too picky at all. I know lots of people who feel the same way.

  2. Actually, that's exactly what they did with the Firewalker series - the cover for the paperback matches the second book. So I just bought the paperback of Trial by Fire and I'm waiting for the paperback of Fire Walker!

  3. It seriously buggers me when they change the covers, the whole trying to sell it better with new covers and all that jazz... The Firewalker series I love the new covers best, so I plan to end up getting the whole series in paperback so I'll have those lovely new covers!

    1. I think they're only succeeding on getting the fans angry lol... But good plan Pili! I wish I loved paperbacks enough :P

  4. I hate cover changes - rarely do the changed covers please me! I LOVED the old cover of Trial by Fire. The new covers remind me of a series that Macmillan published - Firebug by Lish McBride, something like that (never read the books). If I see that there was a cover change while at least one book was published, that is almost always a guarantee that I will NOT buy the books. -__-

    Great post, Eileen!

  5. I loved and adored the cover of Lauren Destefano's first Internment Chronicles book, Perfect Ruin. I have it as an eBook, but was planning on buying the trilogy in hardcover. However, I really don't care for the new covers at all. I hate the most when covers have nice artwork, but then after the first book they want to grab an additional audience and put a girl in a ballgown on the front of a reissue, and then all of the rest of the books that come out have girls in ballgowns. I noticed the other day that some of my Septimus Heap books have this ribbon banner thing on them, and some don't. I think if you have all seven with the banner it makes a design across the spines when they are all together, but because mine are mixed it just annoys me. Ha!

    1. Lol that would totally annoy me too! They all need ribbons! I remember seeing the original cover of Perfect Ruin. It was nice, I don't get why they changed it :(((
